SPIRAL is now accepting applications for the summer of 2009. This program, described below, will run from May 31 through July 11. It will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park. Students at the affiliated colleges and universities listed below are eligble to apply.

The Math SPIRAL summer program in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland in College Park is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Security Agency (NSA). Working with a group of affiliated minority serving colleges and universities, we bring gifted rising sophomores and rising juniors to the College Park campus for a six-week intensive program to help prepare them for graduate study and active careers in the mathematical sciences.

Math SPIRAL has three core components: academics, research and professional development.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday the daytme program runs from 9:00 to 5:00. The morning is mostly academic development, the afternoon is given to exploration of research projects. There will be a good deal of effort required in the evenings with homework assignments and further research work. Wednesdays may also involve homework and research, but the primary focus will be visits with government or corporate bodies that employ mathematicians, or colloquium lectures and panel discussions relating to mathematics as a profession.

Participants will live on campus, and will have no outside commitments. In particular, no outside employment is permitted during the six weeks of this program.

Our program was developed by the University of Maryland, College Park in close coordination with our affiliated institutions:

  • Bowie State University
  • Howard University
  • Morehouse College
  • Morgan State University
  • North Carolina A&T State University
  • Spelman College
  • Trinity University in DC
  • Xavier University of Louisiana

This network of affiliates is a central strength of Math SPIRAL.

Math SPIRAL is only available to students in the mathematical sciences at one of these affiliates.

Applicants should have taken or currently be enrolled in a proof-based course.

Housing in campus residence halls will be provided. Participants will share a room with one other student.

Participants will receive a $3500 stipend.
